Here's Why We Stay Away From Fragrance (And You Should Too)

Have you ever read the ingredient lists for your lotions, perfumes, body washes, shampoo, etc? If so, you might have noticed one of the ingredients listed was “fragrance”... but what exactly is this mysterious “fragrance” ingredient? Fragrance is Harmful, Here’s Why There’s a reason companies try to keep “fragrance” a mystery. In fact, as per the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the average fragrant contains approximately 14 secret chemicals, many of which are associated with allergic reactions and hormone disruption. Yikes! Plus, around 80% of those chemicals have not been tested for human safety in personal care products. Not cool! The EWG also discovered that a whopping 75% of products that list “fragrance” contain the hormone-disrupting chemical phthalates. Phthalates are used to make fragrances last longer, but they have been associated with numerous harmful health conditions, including lower sperm count, liver and breast cancers, reproductive malformation, and diabetes. That’s completely terrifying!

Why is Fragrance is Allowed? So how is this even allowed in the first place? It’s diabolically clever really. Fragrance takes advantage of a loophole in the FDA’s regulation of personal care products. Under the Fair Package and Labeling act of 1966, fragrance is considered a trade secret. This permits companies not to list the individual ingredients that make up fragrance so their formula cannot easily be replicated. However, this also allows companies to add in cheap, but toxic, chemicals to their products to create a scent that is “better” than natural at a lower cost to them. They also use these chemicals to improve the way a spray disperses, so the scent lasts longer. What Happens When I Use Fragrance? Unfortunately, fragrance doesn’t just affect the person who’s using it. When a product is sprayed into the air, it can result in many problems for anyone else who's exposed to it. Fragrance can cause migraines, allergy symptoms, asthma, chronic lung disease, and other health issues. Even if people don’t have immediate reactions to these chemicals, because there’s a lack of testing on these chemicals, no one actually knows the long-term side effects of spraying or rubbing fragrance on our sensitive skin every single day.
