Get the Perfect Manicure... Without the Side Effects!
Who doesn’t love a great manicure? With the invention of shellac polish, manicures are now glossier than ever before and virtually indestructible! Isn’t it amazing when you leave the nail salon and don’t chip your polish immediately, let alone for weeks to come?
Shellac polish is made up of stronger ingredients that stick to the nail more tightly than traditional nail polishes, which is why they don’t chip with daily wear and tear. Shellac polishes are also more flexible, and they’re cured under a UV or LED lamp for instant-drying.
At Thair Hair Boutique and spa we’re big fans of beautiful nails! But guess what we’re not fans of at all? Toxic and harmful ingredients!
Let’s take a look at why regular shellac nail polish is a terrible idea and what you can do to get a beautiful manicure without any side effects instead.
Shellac Nail Polish Has Toxic Ingredients
Unfortunately, many shellac nail lacquers out there are just plain hazardous! Lots of polishes contain ingredients like Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, DBP, Toluen, Camphor, Ethyl Tosylamide, Xylene, or TPHP.
Sounds scary? It is! These ingredients are known to be carcinogenic. You have to ask yourself: Is it really worth getting cancer from a manicure?
After clinical testing, these ingredients, in high doses, were found to cause inflammation and other adverse side effects including disturbing liver and thyroid function. It’s especially dangerous for those nail-biters out there, if you can’t help but chew on your polish. Please be careful!
UV Lamps Can Be Harmful
A study performed by the American Academy of Dermatology found that gel manicures might be unsafe for people with a high sensitivity to UV light. UV sensitivity can be increased through genetic factors, specific medical issues, and due to using some medications and supplements.
Everyone should be concerned about exposing themselves to UV rays during a gel manicure because the lamps used with these manicures give off UVA rays. Although these rays don’t burn the skin as UVB rays do, they will penetrate the skin and cause damage to your DNA and collagen. In turn, this could result in premature ageing and may increase the risk of skin cancer. Um, no thanks!
Some people think that using LED curing lamps are a safer alternative, but that’s a myth because these lamps also give off the same UVA light. Even though curing lamps are only used for a short period during a shellac manicure, research shows that the UV rays given off by these lamps are four times stronger than the sun’s UV rays!
The Removal Process is Dangerous
Yep, sorry—it’s true. A study conducted by the Miami School of Medicine used ultrasound to prove that shellac manicures cause nail thinning. Although the exact reason for the thinning was not apparent, the researchers felt it was likely due to the acetone soak that’s needed to remove the shellac polish.
And if you’ve ever scrubbed at your regular nail polish with some acetone, you’re probably not surprised! It’s an overwhelming chemical that dries your skin and nails instantly. So can you even imagine needing to sit for 30 minutes with remover soaking into your nail bed?! Yuck!!
We Offer a Safe Alternative
Fortunately, there’s no need to give up the luxurious pampering of a shellac manicure, and you don’t have to compromise on the benefits either.
At Thair, we offer an eco-friendly version of shellac using butter LONDON’s eco-gel! It’s a great add on service for only an extra $10, and it creates a thicker, longer lasting polish with no adverse effects!
We’re obsessed with our butter LONDON products because they’re all toxin-free without compromising on colour, quality, or performance. Our butter LONDON polishes use a shock Resistant Polymer Technology that binds together to create a flexible formula that’s long-lasting and chip resistant.
You’ll still get that shellac-like finish & ultra-shine without compromising your skin because it hardens and dries with natural light. Plus, our polish has Bamboo Extract to help promote stronger nails and prevent breakage and peeling. Your nails will love it! And so will you because it’s gluten-free, cruelty-free, and vegan. And it doesn’t contain any of those scary carcinogenic chemicals we mentioned above. Phew!
