Lash Lift vs. Lash Perm: Which One is Right for You?

Do you love long, luscious lashes? If so, chances are you’ve heard of a lash perm but have you heard of a lash lift? Both are great options for getting that curly lash look without the same upkeep as eyelash extensions.

But what are the differences and advantages of each treatment? Let’s take a closer look:

What is a Lash Perm?

You’ve probably heard of a hair perm. After all, they were all the rage in the ’80s! Well, a lash perm is essentially the same concept.

With a lash perm, your lashes become semi-permanently curled for weeks. The process involves winding the hairs around a cylindrical rod, not unlike a curling iron. Lash perms are most effective for those who already have naturally long eyelashes because the treatment curls the ends of the lashes.

What is a Lash Lift?

Just like the name says, a lash lift literally ‘lifts’ your lashes up from the base. This treatment is the same as a perm, however it curls the base of the lash, not the ends, creating the ‘lift’. There is also a different solution used. This works to open up your eyes and give the appearance of longer eyelashes – without needing extensions! Another plus is that the lash lift tends to last a little bit longer than a lash perm.

How Long Do the Treatments Take?

Actually, not as long as you might expect!

At Thair Hair Boutique and Spa, our lash perm services take 45 minutes. We recommend adding our collagen eye pads while the perm is doing its thing so your eyes will look even more stunning when the treatment is over.

Our lash lift service is also 45 minutes. With it, however, you get an excellent lash package (including a lash perm and tint) to really make those lashes pop!

How Much Do They Cost?

Both of our lash perm and lash lift services are very affordable! The lash perm costs $50 while the lash lift is $70. Even better, you’ll be saving on mascara since your eyelashes will look long and curly without any need for makeup.

How Do The Treatments Work?

When you opt for a lash perm, glue (non toxic of course) is brushed onto your upper eyelids to protect your skin from the perm solution and to hold the rod in place while the solution does its job.

After that, the rod is placed against your lash line, between your upper lid and your lashes. Our lash expert will ask you to keep your eyes closed while the perm solution is applied to the entire length of your lashes using a brush. Then, our lash expert will cover your lashes and the rollers in plastic wrap for approximately 15 minutes. During this time, the solution is breaking down the disulfide bonds in your lashes.

Next, an activating solution is applied, and your lashes are brushed around the rods to guarantee that perfect curl. The activating solution then rebuilds the broken disulfide bonds and locks-in your curl. After another 15-minute waiting period, both solutions are carefully removed using water, and your lashes are separated with a comb. Finally, conditioner is applied to the lash to promote the health of your lashes.

You can expect a very similar process with a lash lift. First, you will lie down and close your eyes so the pads can be applied to your eyelids and underneath your eyes. Our experts will begin combing your lashes. After the lash tint is applied and your eyes are wiped clean, you’re all done!

Are the Treatments Safe?

The short answer is yes!

Both lash perms and lash lifts rely on a perming solution, which in the old days used harsh chemicals. Thankfully, times have changed. Today, many beauty companies have begun to make natural and safe solutions that don’t use any parabens or formaldehyde.

At Thair, we pride ourselves on only using the best organic and all-natural products. Rather than artificial chemicals, our lash perm and lash lift solutions use nourishing ingredients like aloe that work to strengthen and hydrate your lashes without causing any damage.

We also go the extra mile to ensure that your lashes will stay healthy by only applying the solution to the root of your lashes. This dramatically decreases the risk of damaging the much finer tips.

Which One is Right For Me?

While both treatments can provide fantastic, eye-opening results (so to speak), the best treatment for you will depend on your natural lash type.

Lash perms are best if you have very straight, very long lashes or very long lashes that grow downward, as a lash perm can make your eyelashes so curly that some people feel it makes their lashes appear shorter. If this is the case and you feel that your lashes are already short, you might want to opt for a lash lift instead.

Both a lash perm and a lash lift will last anywhere from one to three months, with treatment being recommended once every four weeks at most.
