Lash Extensions: What’s the Difference Between Classic, Volume, and Hybrid?

Do you ever get confused by terminology? When it comes to lash-talk, what’s the actual difference between Classic, Volume, and Hybrid lash extensions?

Don’t worry. You don’t have to just nod and smile while wondering what it actually means. We’re here to explain the differences!

At Thair Hair Boutique & Spa, we believe in educating as much as possible so you can choose what’s right for you. So, let’s dive into eyelash extensions!

What Are Lash Extensions?

An eyelash extension is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the fullness, thickness, and length of your natural eyelashes. The extensions made from natural or synthetic hairs attach to your eyelash line with some form of adhesive.

Unlike temporary lash extensions that you attach in your home, professionally-applied eyelash extensions provide a long-lasting enhancement to your eyelashes, giving you a fuller, darker look. Eyelash extensions can give you the look of wearing mascara without having to apply any! They’re pretty neat!

The million-dollar question is, do they look natural? After all, if you have extensions, you likely want them to look as natural as possible. It’s probably desirable to have people react to your overall beauty rather than being fixated on unnatural looking distractions.

That’s where the various types of lashes come in!

What types of eyelash extensions are there?

There are three main kinds of eyelash extensions: Classic, Volume, and Hybrid.

Classic

Classic eyelash extensions are probably the most simple, yet effective option. They simply provide an extension to what’s already there in a 1:1 ratio. Each of your eyelashes is augmented with a Classic extension, providing you with an enhanced and completely natural look.

Classic extensions are available at different thicknesses ranging from 1 - 1.5 mm, allowing you to customize how thick your lashes look. This can be perfect for people who already have a full lash line and merely want to enhance what’s already there.

Volume

On the other hand, you may want something a little more dramatic. With Volume eyelash extension, you can get much more dense-looking lashes. These are also known as “3D extensions.”

With Classic extensions, it’s a simple 1:1 enhancement. With volume eyelash extensions, 2 to 6 very thin lashes are attached in a fan shape to each of your natural lashes. It ranges from more of a 1:2 up to a 1:6 ratio.

If you lack a full lash line, then Volume might be the perfect solution. The many tiny lashes will fill out your lash line, giving you a fuller look. On the other hand, if you already have a full lash line and you choose Volume extensions, you’re going have very dramatic eyelashes! By the end of it, you’re going to have a whopping 150-600 lashes per eye!

Hybrid

Ah, the elusive “happy medium.” What if you want your lash line to be full, but don’t want the dramatic look of Volume extensions? Then you should go for Hybrid extensions!

Hybrid extensions are literally a mix of Classic and Volume. Classic-type extensions are used in areas where your lashes are already full to give you extra length. In areas where your lashes aren’t quite as fully-developed, Volume extensions are used to fill them out. The result gives you a full, natural, fluffier look than Classic extensions with just a little bit of the drama of Volume extensions.

Decisions... Decisions...

So, these are your choices when it comes to eyelash extensions. With Classic, you gain length, but not much volume. With Volume, you gain drama, length, and a TON of volume (hence the name). And with Hybrid, you gain both but without the dramatic, potentially over-done look of Volume lashes.

Which should you get? That depends on your natural lashes and preferred “look.” If you lack a full set of lashes, then Hybrid lashes might be the best choice. If you want to go full-glam movie star, especially for more of a “night” look, then Volume lashes might be the way to go!
